West Brom win over Chelsea excites Ideye

West Brom striker Brown Ideye has hailed the team’s 3-0 win against English Premier League champions Chelsea on Monday at the Hawthorns.
Two goals from Saido Berahino and Chris Brunt handed Chelsea their third defeat in 37 games.
Ideye, who replaced Berahino in the 79th minute of the shock win, described the victory as a great one for the Baggies.
The Nigeria star wrote on his twitter page on Tuesday morning: “Great win yesterday.”
Ideye has appeared 24 times for the Midlands team, scoring four goals.
West Brom are 13th in the league table and will face Arsenal in their final league game on Sunday.

Okagbare shines in China, beats Campbell-Brown, Fraser-Pryce

Nigeria’s golden girl and multiple-times African champion Blessing Okagbare was in fine form on Sunday at the Shanghai Diamond League as she beat a strong field to win the 100m race.
Okagbare won the race in 10.98 seconds, setting a new personal season’s best, and beating favourites Veronica Campbell-Brown and Shelly Frase-Pryce.
The win got Okagbare four points in the Diamond League race.
American Tori Bowie came second in 11.07, while Michelle-Lee Ahye of Trinidad and Tobago was third in 11.13.
The disappointing Campbell-Brown and Fraser-Pryce finished fourth and fifth respectively in 11.22 and 11.25 seconds.

Automatic Shirts For Iheanacho, Success, Simon

Moses Simon
The trio of Kelechi Iheanaho, Isaac Success and Moses Simon has been assured of places in the Flying Eagles squad for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand, Complete Sports can report exclusively.
But the trio, according to the head coach of the team, Manu Garba, must be certified fully fit for the competition before they will be picked.
Garba told Complete Sports in an exclusive chat Wednesday night that he has been in constant touch with the trio and that the three clubs Manchester City, Granada and Gent have agreed to release the players the team.
"Success’ team, Granada is battling relegation in the La Liga and they have pleaded with us that they will release him to us immediately on the 24th after their game against Atlético Madrid," he began in a chat.
"Same with Daddy Simon, he will join the team in New Zealand after his team's final game in the play-offs. The problem with Iheanacho is his visa, once that is sorted he will join the team.
"We all know these players and they are not new to the team so they know how we play. They have been with us since the U-17 days and it will be easy for them to fit into the team.
"We all know the kind of qualities these players (Iheanaho, Success and Simon) possess and how they will be of importance to our team for the World Cup. They will add value to our team.
On why he started Taiwo Awoniyi from the bench in his side’s 5-2 win against Hoffenheim; he said: "There have been lots of talks about him lately and we must do everything to ensure he is in top shape for the World Cup because many teams will be watching him to find means and ways to scheme him out of games.
"He scored three goals, yes, but every player here are doing well to represent the team at the World Cup level so we have a team to face the world." he concluded.

Awoniyi scores hat-trick against Hoffenheim

Nigeria's Under-20 team, the Flying Eagles, kick started their final leg of preparations for the 2015 Fifa U20 World Cup in New Zealand by defeating Hoffenheim's U23 side 5-2 in a friendly game on Tuesday.
The game is the first in a three test series to prepare the team for the competition due to start later this month.
Hoffenheim's Ahmed Sassi had the first real chance of the game as his header came off the Nigeria post, as Chidera Eze also missed a one-on-one chance with the Ricco Cymer in goal for the Bundesliga side.
Plateau United's Godwin Savior gave Nigeria the lead but Hoffenheim soon equalised through Allesandro Abrussia.
Eze made up for his miss by putting Nigeria ahead again before the home side equalised again through an Ahmed Azaouagh effort.
In form striker Taiwo Awoniyi will bag a hat-trick to give the African champions a three goal cushion and end the game at 5-2, a positive start to the Flying Eagles camping exercise in Germany.
Coach Garba Manu will have till Friday this week to submit his 21 man list for the championship.
The Flying Eagles have two more test games against the U23 sides of Nurnberg on Friday and Freiburg next Tuesday before leaving for New Zealand via Australia.

It's difficult dropping some players - Flying Eagles Coach

With just a week left before submission of the final list of 21 players for the FIFA U20 World Cup, Flying Eagles coach, Manu Garba has admitted he’s having good selection headache.
The team is currently in Nurnberg, Germany, making final preparations for the championship which holds in New Zealand from May 30, and Manu says the players have so far performed very well that he and his assistants will find it a tough task to drop any of the lads.
“The boys have been doing well and we are very proud of them but I think we will have a good selection headache when it comes to dropping some of them,” he admitted.
“It’s not going to be an easy thing to do because these boys have been giving their best since they arrived and it will be a bit difficult to drop some of them.
“But unfortunately we cannot take all of them to New Zealand so some of the will have to return home,” he said regretfully.
Asked if he finds it an advantage or otherwise to have so many ‘good players’, the former Nigeria U17 coach says it is always a good problem to have.
“It is an advantage of course, having to choose from a pool of very good players. I just feel for the ones that won’t make it but it’s not the end of the world,” he added.

A season of awards for Iorfa

Youngster Dominic Iorfa started his Wolverhampton Wanderers career as a first team player with an award and ended the 2014/15 season in style as he emerged winner of the club's Young Professional of the Season to complete a season of awards.
Iorfa played a key role as Kenny Jackett's side fought the good fight, but placed seventh and lost out for a place in the Championship play-offs on goal difference after finishing on 78 points with Brentford and Ipswich Town.
Credit must go to Jackett, who demonstrated exceptional faith in the teenager.
Supersport.com learnt that Iorfa's exploits have since attracted the attention of some of the Premier League big clubs, but Wolves are keen to keep their academy product to boost their promotion bid next term.
Iorfa beat Kortney Hause and Jonathan Flatt to win the award at the impressive ceremony held at Telford International Centre on Wednesday night.
Interestingly, the youngster played a key role as Wolves fought back after a string of poor results to push for promotion.
It is a season of awards for Iorfa, who made his debut on a losing note in the 2-1 loss to eventual Championship winners, Bournemouth, but emerged as man of the match for his exploits.
Iorfa's exploits earned him the SkyBet Football League Player of the Month in January, coming a mere eight weeks after his debut for the first team, and he added another Wolves man of the match award against Ipswich, in April.
After picking up the Football League award, Arthur Benton, who was Iorfa's landlord during his formative years in the Championship club's academy, described him as the best talent he has mentored.
"This is about the 12th season that we've had kids with us," he said. "The only one that's really made it at Wolves out of all of them is Dom, and he's come on leaps and bounds.
"All of a sudden, he's got in the first team and he looks like he's been there for ages," he told BBC Sport.
The exploits of the youngster earned him an improved contract and an extension until 2017, with a year's option.
With the conclusion of club commitment for the season, the attention of the England under-20 fullback will be turned to the Toulon Invitational Tournament.
Iorfa, 19, grew up in Southend before being spotted by Wolves at the age of 15 and relocated to Wolverhampton, where he joined the academy.
A loan spell with lower division side Shrewsbury followed at the age of 18 and now, just a mere 12 months later, he finds himself being a key member of the Championship side that narrowly missed the play-offs.
Iorfa, is the son of a former Nigeria international of the same name, who played for several English clubs including Queens Park Rangers and Peterborough.
Individual awards:
Wolverhampton Wanderers Man of the Match Award v Bournemouth
SkyBet Football League Player of the Month for January
Wolverhampton Wanderers Man of the Match Award v Ipswich Town
Wolverhampton Wanderers Young Professional of the Season Award

Iheanacho ready for U20 World Cup

Manchester City teen sensation has expressed his joy at being fit after overcoming series of injuries this season.
The 2013 Under-17 Most Valuable player has thrice suffered from different type of injuries that have restricted his career in his first season at the Etihad.
However the 18-year-old has played three games in seven days for both Manchester City Under-18 and 21 teams without any relapse, and he scored twice in those games.
Excitedly he took to social media to post on his joy at finally burying his injury demons and revealed he is fit for the Under-20 World cup in New Zealand.
“I played 3 games for MFCF’s Academy this week. Praise God! I am fit and excited for the U20 World Cup. Just waiting for my New Zealand Visa,” he posted on twitter.
He is expected to however join Nigeria in camp in preparedness for the championship after Manchester City youth team final match against FC Porto in the International Premier League game on Friday.

The fight of the century that wasn't

It took five excruciating years of haggling, and months of intense buildup, for the highly anticipated "fight of the century" between the world's two leading pound-for-pound boxers to happen. It was also the highest grossing fighting match of all time, with the two protagonists collectively taking home as much as $300m in talent fees.
Heading into the twilight years of their boxing careers, both men carried immense burden on their shoulders.  Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao represented the hopes and dreams of 100 million Filipinos, who saw him as their greatest living national treasure, bringing pride and recognition to their country like no one else. The Filipino boxing legend was also supported by the broader Asian community, who saw him as the embodiment of the spirit of discipline and resilience.
Meanwhile, Floyd "Money" Mayweather was keen on maintaining his almost two-decade-long undefeated record, hoping to vanquish his ultimate rival and cement his legacy as the greatest boxer of his generation. It was a high-stakes match on a cocktail of overweening vanity, money, and bragging rights.
Cashing in on their intense rivalry and unquestionable fighting pedigrees, the two boxers managed to create enough excitement to launch the most "lucrative fight of the century", which became a must-watch for the global elite who fought over precious tickets with stratospheric price tags.
Was it worth it?
But the match ultimately ended up as underwhelming, with Pacquiao remaining as "people's champion", while Mayweather was once again the "judges' champion".
Throughout 12 rounds of boxing, Mayweather jealously guarded his undefeated record by systematically employing his signature strategy of evading sustained exchanges with his opponent. At times, it was a boring and annoying fight, leaving many people wondering whether all the hype was justified. Some fans paid as much as $40,955 to grab a seat close to the fighting ring.
On his part, Pacquiao was left frustrated, incredulously challenging Mayweather's unanimous decision victory. In a bizarrely adversarial post-fight interview with sports commentator Max Kellerman, who seemingly tried to convince the Filipino boxer that he was roundly defeated, Pacquiao insisted that he won the fight, and that he couldn't land as many punches as he used to due to Mayweather's constant evasion.
Predictably, many Filipinos were unhappy with the both the fight and the subsequent interview, lashing out at the American commentator on social media and elsewhere.
A Pacquiao fan, Cambodia's strongman Hun Sen also joined in, refusing to pay a $5,000 bet, because "Floyd was just running around - blocking and avoiding - while Pacquiao repeatedly threw more and more punches, punching him to lie against the ropes".
Accusing American judges of making "a unanimous decision to make a winner become a loser", he suggested the match should have been held outside the US, possibly in China.
Courting controversy
Bitter and incredulous about his defeat, Pacquiao has challenged hisopponent to a rematch. Later on, he got into trouble by claiming his performance was compromised by a shoulder injury, and there were suggestions that he was not allowed to take necessary medication for it.
There has been a lot of confusion over whether authorities were informed of Pacquiao's reported injury at all, raising speculation that he could face charges of perjury. He also faced lawsuits from individuals who claimed they were defrauded, because the Filipino boxer didn't disclose his injury before the much-anticipated fight they paid to watch.
Eager to prove his mettle, and ascertain his status as the top fighter of our era, Mayweather has reportedly agreed to a rematch, possibly sometime in 2016 after Pacquiao makes full recovery from his shoulder injury. The American boxing prodigy is postponing his retirement.
For long, experts have been anticipating the decline of boxing as a popular sport. Its particularly brutal and vicious nature has convinced many that boxing is an anathema to our modern age of civility. We live in a time where gentlemen's sports such as golf have captured the imagination of millions of people.
Sports such as tennis, soccer, and basketball have also provided us with a wide array of bigger-than-life stars, who are gifted with uber-human athleticism and celebrity-like personas. For sure, there are still many people, who prefer to watch and are deeply passionate about fighting sports.
But boxing is also being challenged by the rise of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), which has drawn the world's leading athletes and Olympians to an incredibly more dynamic - and even more vicious - pugilist enterprise.
Overall, the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight may represent the peak of boxing as a sport before its inevitable decline. And it is highly doubtful whether a potential rematch between the two fighters could gross as much money as the first one.
Yet, few can deny the amount of talent, fame, and excitement the two boxers have generated over the years, cementing their positions as among the leading celebrity fighters of the century.

England’s FA sought black player quotas

Graham Taylor in 1999, when he was manager of Watford
Two officials from the Football Association told former England manager Graham Taylor to limit the number of black players in his squad, a new book has claimed.
Taylor, who managed England from 1990 to 1993, has denied the claim, made in ‘Pitch Black: The Story of Black British Footballers’, written by Emy Onuora, the brother of former professional footballer Iffy Onuora.
In the book, Onuora says that former Birmingham City striker Richie Moran, who became an anti-racism campaigner, spoke to Taylor at an event held by Watford, then managed by Taylor, during the 1999-2000 season.
Moran is quoted as saying: “Graham Taylor came up to me and said: ‘Look, I’m going to tell you something … I’m never going to admit it, I will be sued for libel.’
“He said: ‘When I was manager of England I was called in by two members of the FA, who I won’t name …’ I volunteered two names.
“He said: ‘I’m not prepared to say, but I was told in no uncertain terms not to pick too many black players for the national side.'”
Responding to the claims in an interview with BBC radio, Taylor, now 70, said: “It has taken me by complete surprise because I cannot remember anything about it at all.
“Certainly never during my time at the Football Association I had no FA people coming up to me and telling me which team to pick and to pick less black players. I would have remembered that.”
There is no suggestion that Taylor, who selected several black players during his time as England manager, acquiesced with the request.
He told The Guardian: “That is not me trying to evade it — and it also doesn’t mean I didn’t say it — but if anyone looks at my record with club and country, it would be obvious to everyone anyway that I didn’t follow what was apparently said. If anyone looks at my record, I could never be accused of blocking the way for any black player.”

Messi and Ronaldo goal for goal

A riveting subplot has developed in this season's Uefa Champions League. The two greatest forwards of the age have both surpassed Raúl González's total for goals in the competition and after the first legs of the semifinals, Lionel Messi leads Cristiano Ronaldo 77-76 having briefly fallen behind on Tuesday night.
Uefa.com has listed all Messi and Ronaldo's strikes since they first found the net at this level and picked out some noteworthy stats from all the numbers.
  • Messi has only been on the losing side twice when he has scored
  • Ronaldo has netted twice or more on 20 different occasions
  • Messi has registered five hat-tricks
  • Ronaldo did not score until his 30th game in the competition; he has since hit 74 goals
  • Both players have scored two goals across two finals
